      LAND PURCHASE

Approximately a year ago, a long-time parishioner brought to my attention that a lot of development in our neighborhood was on the horizon. As you look around you will see that the clearing of land has already begun. The same parishioner pointed out that some land was still available for purchase just beyond the baseball diamond and suggested that we purchase the available 4 acres or risk getting land locked. I presented the project to the parish and finance councils who voted in favor of the land purchase. Before presenting the formal request to Bishop Sis for permission I asked his opinion. He is very much in favor of the purchase.

All the other parishes in the area are landlocked and their pastors said that we are in an enviable position and should not let the opportunity go by. If we get landlocked, not only will there be no room to build but we will risk encroachment by homes and whatever other development projects can come about. Looking to the future it is very advisable to purchase the land. The point now is not what we intend to build but to avoid getting landlocked. Even having a parish festival would be problematic because of noise ordinances or having to ask permission from who knows how many households.

The land has been evaluated at $55,000 an acre. The Hurt family is willing to sell us the 4.36 acres at $35,000 an acre. A number of people have made pledges towards the purchase but we are still short $50,000. That is where you come in. We are asking that each family consider making a donation toward this purchase.  Even $100 would help in making this possible.

We will have a second collection the weekend of February 18-19 for donations to the proposed land purchase.  An online giving link has also been set up on our website for those who wish to contribute online.  Maps of the property showing where the proposed land is located are on display in the narthex.

      Father Joe

We see Jesus as the judge who shows mercy and love. Think of judgment as a sort of light, which reveals both the positive and the negative.
    • EMAIL SCAM

Dear parishioners and friends of SEAS, it has come to our attention that fraudulent emails are being received by many of you requesting gifts cards, money, etc. be purchased for Fr. Joe Barbieri. This is a scam. Please disregard these emails and do not open any links therein. Thank you.

    • Catholic Charities Needs YOUR Help!

Have you ever wondered what your donations are used for at Catholic Charities Odessa? One of the most important programs we have that serve our community is the Cory Learning Center. I think we all know that a lack of basic education can prevent a community from developing at a steady rate and contributes to the struggle of those living in poverty. Education is key to getting an individual and their family out of poverty allowing them to maintain the household without assistance. Every class offered in the Cory Learning Center help to prepare an individual to become an active contributing member of our community. The Cory Learning Center provides adult students with the opportunity to succeed at home and in the workplace by removing barriers that will ensure that generational poverty can stop. Catholic Charities Cory Learning Center offers classes in GED (Online, In-Class & Spanish), Adult Basic Education, Financial Literacy, Computer Literacy, ESL, and Citizenship Test Prep.  Thanks to our incredible donors, like you, that support the good works of Catholic Charities Odessa, we offer these classes free of charge to the community.  Every year we have over 450 students that successfully complete these courses through the center.  Our GED test prep class is recognized by the State of Texas as a GOLD Star Test Prep Center.
On behalf of the students we serve, thank you foryour continued support!

    • It has come to our attention that small groups of panhandlers have been approaching SEAS parishioners between Masses and in the narthex of the church. Unfortunately, these individuals have proven to be aggressive and have made our more vulnerable parishioners very uncomfortable by their methods. Continued handouts to these panhandlers can be a very real safety hazard for our fellow parishioners and staff. Our community has a legitimate and structured means of helping the needy such as Catholic Charities. Kindly refer panhandlers to Catholic Charities and do not succumb to their methods. If you see any suspicious activity in our parking lot, please don’t hesitate to help your fellow parishioner.  Report any incidents ASAP to one of our ushers, deacons or Fr. Joe. Please stay safe and vigilant! God Bless.
